BUSM Alumni News
Greetings,

"If 2020 taught us all anything, it's that we are resilient, strong, and can shape a better future, not just for our own life, but for the community around us."

- Kari-Claudia Allen MD (MED'13, SPH'13)

As we continue to weather the seismic shifts that have occurred in our environment, we look forward to finding and celebrating meaningful ways to keep you connected.

Twenty-five alumni from BUSM Class of 1980 recently came together for a virtual toast in honor of their 40th reunion. "We graduated 40 years ago and went our separate ways, yet we still maintain that bond of being the BUSM Class of 1980 and no pandemic can stop that." Ken Simons, MD, (MED'80). Joining from across the country, participants reconnected and shared stories from their professional careers and personal lives; it was a heartfelt evening that was topped off with Dr. Simons' toast.

We appreciate the desire and need to join with others, and invite you to sponsor a virtual class gathering. Please reach out to our Alumni Office team; we are happy to facilitate the virtual event.

This Black History Month, we spotlight two members of the BUSM family. Hear from a student who appreciates, the “work and time commitment that goes into making each of us a better student and eventually a better doctor,” and from an alumna who recalls her sub-internship at BMC: “students were truly treated as interns and given the opportunity to manage their patients – it was a great learning experience.”

This month, BUSM formally celebrates Rebecca Lee Crumpler, MD, (MED 1864), with a week-long virtual symposia. We encourage you to participate and share with others these activities as we honor her accomplishments as the first Black female physician to graduate from medical school. The week kicks off with an examination of the triumphs of Dr. Crumpler and other firsts in medicine.

The symposia will feature prominent Black female trailblazers in medicine sharing their inspirational stories of professional achievements, rising stars in healthcare who will discuss the disparities and lack of Black healthcare leaders, and a mentoring/networking event for Early Medical School Selection Program (EMSSP) alumni and students. This tight-knit family shares unique experiences and offers supportive guidance and wisdom. Closing the week, a panel of leading COVID experts will offer perspectives on the effect of the pandemic on the Black Community to further our conversations and actions on making systemic change.

We hope you enjoy hearing about activities and people in the BUSM community via this newsletter, and we welcome your ideas on things you would like to hear more about!

Wishing you the best,
