BUSM Alumni News

Greetings,

For those who are not baseball fans, please forgive me for a moment as we send this e-news during what I believe is the best time of year- October baseball! Although the Red Sox lost the opportunity for the World Series this year, over the last few weeks I have enjoyed sharing memories of watching the 2003 postseason on Landsdowne Street with my BUSM classmates. Other alumni have also recently found connections with their colleagues across BUSM years. Alumnus Rob Bollo, MD, (MED’03), sent in a wonderful picture featuring himself with fellow alumni Jeff Frame, MD, (MED'09) and Rebecca Burke, MD, (MED'14), working together in the brand new intraoperative MRI at Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City, UT, after performing the cutting edge robotic-assisted laser ablation of a thalamic brain tumor in a young boy. Check out the picture in our Alumni News section below!

Medical Equipment Day was a time for reflection and thanks for many of us at BUSM. Gathering in Hiebert, we celebrated this event in person with first-year medical students. Thank you to our generous alumni who gifted stethoscopes and Elizabeth Dooling, MD, (MED’65), who provided a copy of Being Mortal by Atul Gawande to each student. We appreciate the continued generosity and know that the students are incredibly grateful. In addition to receiving stethoscopes, the first-year students had the opportunity to listen to the Lorraine Stanfield Memorial Doctoring Lecture. This lecture pays tribute to Dr. Stanfield who served as assistant professor of medicine, director of the Introduction to Clinical Medicine 2 (ICM-2) course, director of the Clinical Skills and Simulation Center, student advisor and Center for Community Health Education Research and Service, Inc. (CCHERs) instructor for more than 20 years. As a former participant of the CCHERS program, I know that I am one of many BUSM alumni who are thankful for the leadership and mentorship we received from Lorraine while we learned what it meant to provide community-based and community-focused healthcare. Lorraine Stanfield touched many of our lives. Please hear stories of her life and the lives of many whom she touched here. To access the video please enter this password: 0xT!VeZh. If able, consider giving to the Clinical Skills & Simulation Center Fund which supports a BUSM student participating in community health work between first and second year of medical school.

Anton Nigusse Bland, MD, (MED’08), is featured as this month’s Alumni Spotlight. He is a graduate of Dillard University and an alumnus of the Early Medical School Selection Program (EMSSP). He completed his psychiatry residency at Sheppard Pratt Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, and an addiction psychiatry fellowship at BMC.

This month’s Student Spotlight features Preston Butler, (MED’22). Preston recently received the prestigious Pisacano Scholarship, which is given to a select number of medical students in the United States entering Family Medicine and who demonstrate great leadership skills, academic achievement, communication skills, integrity and community service. We are immensely proud to have one of our BUSM students recognized for their dedication to the pursuit of medicine.

We also celebrate BUSM’s Biology of the Lung, A Multidisciplinary Program, which recently received approval from the National Institute of Health for funding through its fiftieth year. Started in 1975, the renewal will fund stipends and other expenses for a dozen trainees a year until 2026; what an amazing milestone.

We encourage you to stay connected and if possible, please join us for conversations and connections at our M1 Meet and Greet event on Nov. 30, 2021. Register here. The students appreciate your guidance and we hope to connect you to them with this mentoring opportunity.

Wishing you the best,
