Join us for this interactive virtual session, the first in this year's BU School of Social Work Equity & Inclusion Speaker Series, as we take a hard look at bias in academia.
Higher education is not immune to racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia and other forms of bias. Research shows there is a persistent lack of people of color and women in academic leadership and faculty positions; and students, staff and faculty from marginalized backgrounds continue to face microaggressions and exclusion. This event will take an intersectional approach and consider the complexities and overlap of biases.
This session will cover:
- The history. How institutionalized racism and bias became embedded in academia, and how that history still shapes experiences today
- How to recognize bias, on both an individual and systemic level
- How to respond, professionally and effectively, whether it's directed at you or someone else
- How to be an effective ally to colleagues and peers from marginalized backgrounds
Dr. Jacobson López will draw on his own research throughout the discussion, offering both context and practical tools attendees can apply in their own workplaces and communities.
One CE credit will be available to social workers licensed in the United States. If you wish to receive CE credit, please provide your license number in the registration form.
This event is part of the BUSSW Equity & Inclusion Speaker Series presented by the school's Equity & Inclusion Committee. Please visit bu.edu/ssw/eiss for additional details, past event recordings, and more.
