This keynote, sponsored by MAB Community Services, will be free and open to all alumni, faculty, staff, students, and community partners. It is part of BU Wheelock Forum 2020. The lecture will be followed by a Dessert Reception and Cash Bar.
Temple Grandin, Ph.D., is one of the most accomplished and well-known adults with autism in the world. Dr. Grandin is a speaker who inspires and motivates others through her story. Her first book, Emergence: Labeled Autistic, stunned the world by breaking the widely-held assumption that an autism diagnosis was virtually a death sentence to achievement or productivity in life. Her 2010 TED Talk, “The world needs all kinds of minds,” has been viewed over five million times, and she was the subject of HBO’s 2010 movie Temple Grandin, starring Claire Danes.
“Helping Different Kinds of Minds Solve Problems”
There are three basic ways that people think differently when solving problems. They include photo-realistic visual thinking (like Dr. Grandin), pattern mathematical (the way most engineers think) and word-verbal thinking. People with different ways of thinking have complementary skills, and we should seek to design our collaborative projects with this potential in mind.
This holds true in classrooms, professional spaces, and in academic institutions. While large universities are home to diverse ways of thinking, historically they have been structured in ways that can inhibit collaboration. By reaching beyond “academic silos” and working across organizational units, we increase our chances of bringing different kinds of minds together in service of solving our most complex problems.
