The 2020 electoral season in the U.S. seems unlike any other, raising one worry after another about whether it is being conducted and will conclude as an election in a fully democratic polity ought to operate. But this isn’t the first time a U.S. election felt like a bad turning point. Consider the election of the American Centennial Year, 1876….

***About the speaker***
Virginia Sapiro is Professor of Political Science and Dean Emerita of Arts & Sciences at Boston University. She has published extensively in the areas of American politics, including public opinion, elections, political history, and gender and politics. She has received many honors and awards for her research and teaching, and is a member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. She is currently working on a book on the history of American higher education.
